This course is designed as an alternative entry point to economics. There is no prerequisite for this course; students may enter without having taken the standard principles courses. Throughout the course, students will dip their toes into a variety of sub-disciplines within economics and apply what they have learned to the analysis of government policies regarding reproduction.
Sub-disciplines introduced include:
Microeconomics (e.g. consumer theory & externalities)
Macroeconomics (e.g. economic growth theory)
Economic demography
Development economics
Behavioral economics (e.g. future discounting)
Gender economics
Economic history
Impact evaluation
Application of the theories and tools are organized into five key modules:
Examine the history of policies that governments have employed to influence or control fertility
Use economic models and methods to understand how economic contexts contributed to the implementation of policies and understand their predicted impacts
Evaluate the existing empirical evidence of the policies’ impacts and historical legacies.
